Module 2

Now module 2 down and onto Module 3.

Have found time very hard over the last few weeks with xmas and new year and everything else. Have tried to stay on top of my tasks but fell to the wayside with updating my log. I was recording a lot of stuff from my tasks and have now updated my log, sorry for the delay.

Chat - Group

On Sunday 4/1/09 7pm the group chat for ICQ was scheduled.

I logged in at about 6.50pm and there were already a few fellow net11 students chatting. I joined in with the group chat and by 7pm there were a few of us. As the chat went on there were a few more users, we ended up with a group chat with 14 of us at once.

The chat was good we all found a bit out about each other, our study paths and our interests. It felt like I got to know everyone a little bit better. The chat was pretty chaotic, everyone chatting at once and a few conversations happening at the same time. It was pretty full on to keep up with but a good experience.

As for ICQ it was easy to use, this was my first time using. In comparison to msn it looked quite similar I am more used to msn and probably prefer it simply because my friends are on there. This was my first ever group chat using any program, a good experience for this task.
May have to try this one again maybe next Sunday considering there is now a regular sunday chat group, hope to see you there.

Chat

Did not receive a response for msn chat.

Decided to set up ICQ as there was a chat being organised for Sunday 4/1/09.

On 3/1/09 downloaded ICQ and installed.

I decided this would be different option as I had not used ICQ before but had used MSN in the past.

Added a list of numbers for ICQ users and will try to join the Sunday Chat.

Chat

7.16 pm 1/1/09 set up msn and added 10 contacts from thread on webct.
Requested for a group discussion

Lists

I think that lists have their places as do discussion boards. Lists probable become a little out of hand at times because quite often you sign up for a list or give your email address out and then end up with loads of junk mail. With lists you continually receive emails that can either be wanted or unwanted. I know I get heaps of junk from email lists, I do however ensure I only use one particular email address to sign up on lists and this way I don't have to read them or get too bogged down. I end up deleting so many emails without actually reading them.

On the other hand discussion boards are sought out by the user. You can go to participate in a conversation or find information from previous conversations. You seek out the conversation and are not bombarded with it.

The only email lists I like to receive are the ones notifying me of when the sales are on.
The only discussion boards I use are for my online study.

2. Multiple recipients

CC - I would cc in recipients when the information contained in the email is relevant to more than one party, or if I wanted somebody to know and see the information that I had sent to somebody else. This could be because they may monitor to ensure the email is responded to or to perhaps add in further information that they think may be relevant to the subject.

BCC - This on the other hand is used so the recipient can not infact see who is copied in on the email. This is to keep all addressee's email details private so that the other parties can not see their details.

REPLY ALL - is used to reply to not only the sender but to all people copied in on the email also. By replying to all anybody who is in the to or cc fields will receive the response.

3. It is important to send attachments in a format that is readable by the recipient. If files are large they should be compressed. It is common practice to send a plain text file ASCII if you are unsure of the recipients computer these can be read by anyone users with both pc & mcintosh.

4. I did not have any filters set up this is not a function I have used before. I am now in the process of setting up my work email with filters to place all emails from particular recipients into a folder. I am going to do all my importers first so that all my import documents are in the same place and easily accessible for later reference.

As for my personal emails I thought I might have a play with some of these junk filters I have read about.

5. I only organise my work emails into folders. At home I don't really bother.

At work I have organised my emails by company sending, person sending or topic depending on what it relates to . Here is a copy of my folders and how they are set up in my work email.
